French teenager tennis player Michael Kouame stirred controversy at the ongoing ITF Junior tournament in Accra when he slapped his opponent, Raphael Nii Ankrah, after losing to him.

Kouame, ranked as the No.1 seed at the competition, was given a run for his money by his Ghanaian opponent during Tuesday’s contest.

Having lost the opening set 6-2 to Nii Ankrah, the French teenager fought back to restore parity by winning the second set 6-7. The third set, however, belonged to Nii Ankrah, who eliminated Kouame after a tough match that needed a tie-breaker to win 7-6.

As a show of sportsmanship, both players exchanged a customary handshake after the game but Kouame surprisingly took advantage to slap his opponent.

His conduct was widely criticised by those present, with the ITF subsequently suspending him from the ongoing tennis competition.

This was confirmed by an Executive member of the Ghana Tennis Federation, Henry Boni Quarshie, who suggested there could be further sanctions.

“The player in question has been suspended. We have reviewed the unfortunate incident and per the tournament regulations, taken several decisions,” he said, as quoted by Asaaseradio.com.

“The first is that he will default on the doubles tournament he registered for; which in tennis language means he is suspended and will not take part in the tournament. As for the singles event, he has been eliminated so I guess that takes care of itself.”

He added: “The competition is held in two phases and many players like to compete in both. Michael Kouame is one of such players and he registered and was accepted for both. However, after his conduct on Monday, the Federation in consultation with ITF wants to review his registration and eligibility for next week’s tournament.

“But this takes place after the tournament director presents his report on the conclusion of the first tournament which will conclude at the end of this week. After the meeting, we’ll communicate whether or not his admission for the tournament has been withdrawn or not.”

Kouame will, therefore, not take part in the doubles competition as a result of his suspension despite later apologising to Nii Ankrah.
