There Will Be No Reduction In Transport Fares – GPRTU PRO

interview that there will be no reduction in lorry fares despite a call from the public to reduce transport fares

The Public relations officer for Ghana Private Road Transport Union(GPRTU), Mr Ibrahim Abass, has bluntly revealed in an interview that there will be no reduction in lorry fares despite a call from the public to reduce transport fares after the President’s recent address to the nation.

The President in his address lifted the restrictions he placed on vehicles and disclosed that the commercial vehicles can now take full capacity. This meant that vehicles that had their sitting capacity reduced to two passengers in a row during the restriction, could now return to three in a row and so on.

Upon hearing the new directive, a large section of the public has made a legitimate call to the government to revoke the recent 15% increment the GPRTU placed on fares; since commercial vehicles are now operating on a full capacity basis.

Unfortunately, the GPRTU thinks otherwise. “There will be no reduction in lorry fares; It is better I tell you the truth for you to cry than to tell you a lie to make you happy. To be honest, we are planning to have a meeting with the government to further push the increment from 15% to 25% to make up for the losses we incurred under the restrictions”. The PRO said in his reaction to the public’s call.

About the above, majority of the public are of the notion that government’s decision to lift the restrictions on vehicles was inauspicious and that Ghana has missed the opportunity to sustain the sanity, convenience and comfort that was restored in our commercial buses under the restrictions.

Another section of the public is also of the view that if the government and the transport ministry cannot direct the GPRTU to reduce their fares, then, the lifted COVID restrictions should be re-imposed to ensure that passengers enjoy the sanity, comfort and convenience that comes with paying outrageous fares in commercial vehicles otherwise there is no value for money.
