A self-service SIM Registration App would be ready for commercial launch on Tuesday, August 2, 2022, as part of efforts to deal with some challenges associated with the ongoing SIM re-registration exercise, Minister for Communications and Digitalisation, Mrs. Ursula Owusu-Ekuful has disclosed.

According to her, the app will enable the public re-register their sim cards in the comfort of their homes without having to cue in any network provider’s office, adding that, it would be available for download on both android and IOS this week with subject to a five-cedi surcharge.

The Minister added that there will be public education on the use of the Self-Service SIM Registration App as part of its roll-out.

“The SIM Registration App will be available for download on both android and IOS this week barring any unforeseen circumstances. Each registration via the app will be subject to a 5 cedi surcharge.”

She added, “Non-resident Ghanaians who do not have the Ghana card can use their passports to complete the process but will be required to update their details with the Ghana card once they acquire it. They have up till December 2022 to do so. I urge them to comply with these directives and to contact the NCA if they have any peculiar challenges. Ghanaians on official assignment outside the country or students on scholarships who cannot acquire the Ghana card by December should contact the NCA. Special provision has already been made for members of the diplomatic corps in consultation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and regional Integration and they have been notified.

“It has come to my knowledge that Amputees and others who have some physical challenges are also a category of persons that are having problems registering their SIMs. We will have discussions with the NIA to resolve them.”

Addressing the media yesterday, the Minister again said upon consultation with the telecommunications industry and “in view of the challenges, I have very reluctantly decided to grant a final conditional extension” to September 30, 2022.

“The programme will, and I am choosing my words carefully, the programme will be extended to 30th September to end on the anniversary of its commencement.

“That will give us one full year of SIM registration, it will be reviewed at the end of this month and any SIM that has not been fully registered by the end of August will be barred from receiving certain services including voice and data services, it will also be more expensive to use unregistered SIMS. The full range of punitive measures will be announced at another press briefing in September…” she made it known.

The Nominations have opened for the ever-prestigious 7th EMY Africa Awards have been announced on Saturday, August 6, 2022, with the announcement aired live on Joy Prime on DSTV channel 281, Joy 99.7 FM, Akwaaba Magic and Akwaaba Magic Abusua on DSTV channels 150 and 149 respectively and streamed live on YouTube via EMY Africa network.

The nominee’s announcement show, which was shot at the plush Labadi Beach Hotel in Accra was a world class production. The hosts, the versatile screen empress Nana Ama McBrown and the experienced Prince Moses Ofori Atta combined their creativity and charm to make the show a delight to watch, in anticipation of the main Awards event on October 1, 2022. Only the nominees for the four voting categories were announced- Man of the Year Music, Discovery of the Year, Actor of the Year and Designer of the Year.

The honorees for some of the honorary categories will be announced in the coming weeks leading to the main awards night, while the rest will be announced at the main awards event.

Voting process

To vote, individuals are expected to visit www.emyafrica.com  and vote for their favorite nominees. They can also like the nominees post on @emyafrica Instagram page and text EMY, plus the name of the preferred nominee and category to short code 1393 to complete the voting process. The public vote constitutes 50% of total vote for the 7th EMY Africa Awards.

The voting process, according to the organizer, effectively ends on September 22, 2022.

“As we always do, it is important for the public to participate in this process to give confidence to the selection mechanism”, Executive Director of EMY Africa, Daniel Kojo Soboh said.

Spanning categories, such as; Man of the Year, Magnate Award, Humanitarian Award, Young Achiever Award, Lifetime Achievement Award, Diasporan Award, Continental Icon Awards, The Technology Award, Woman of the Year, The Guardian Award, Health Award, and the Agriculture Award, this year’s event promises many positive surprises that has become the hallmark of the Awards.

The voting categories

One of the key categories, MAN OF THE YEAR MUSIC, seeks to recognise the most prolific and consistent personality in the Music industry in the year under review. This honour is expected to go to an eventual winner who is Ghana-centric and have reach that extends beyond the country’s borders. In this category, big names such as Kidi, Kofi Kinata, King Promise and Joe Mettle made the slot.

The DISCOVERY OF THE YEAR category, recognises a young adult-male who is emerging in a chosen industry. He must exhibit peer leadership skills and be a budding pillar of community. Names including Jeffrey Appiagyei, Black Sherif, Yemoh Ike & Amartei Armah and FREE THE YOUTH (Jonathan Coffie, Winifred Mensah, Richard Ormano and Kelly Foli) made the list.

For the ACTOR OF THE YEAR, the eventual winner must be prolific and consistent in the movie industry in the year under review. He must be Ghana-centric and have reach that extends beyond the country’s borders. This category has nominees including, Adjetey Annag, Mawuli Gavor, Anthony Woode and James Gardiner.

Similarly, four key nominees have been shortlisted for the DESIGNER OF THE YEAR– a recognition which seeks to celebrate the most outstanding male designer, whose ideas are original and impactful. The nominees include Phillip Adjepong – Phil and Joe (Ghana), Mai Atafo – Atafo (Nigeria), George Tetteh – Atto Tetteh (Ghana) and Ezekiel Yartel- Yartel (Ghana).

, Nigerian Navy hands over rescued Ghanaians to Consulate, Frederick Nuetei

Two Ghanaian fishermen rescued from drowning at sea on August 3 by operatives of the Nigerian Navy (NN) have been handed over to the Ghana High Commission in Lagos.

The two men, Francis Cudjoe and John Qualcoo, were seen floating on the water 10 nautical miles Northeast of Dangote Quays Ibeju Lekki by NNS PROSPERITY which immediately carried out an emergency evacuation.

It was later discovered that the fishermen were four but two drowned before the naval ship that was on routine patrol discovered the floating men.

A statement Monday night by spokesman for the Western Naval Command (WNC), Commander Edward Yeibo, revealed that the rescued men were offered medical attention at NNS BEECROFT from that day till Monday when they were handed over to their country’s representatives in Lagos.

The statement read;


“The rescued men; Mr Francis Cudjoe and Mr John Qualcoo were thereafter recovered to NNS BEECROFT, Naval Base Apapa, where they received medical care and attention. Today, 8 August 2022, NNS BEECROFT handed over the two rescued Ghanaian fishermen to the representatives of the Ghana Consulate in Lagos.

“While commiserating with the Ghanaian Community on the loss of the other two fishermen, the Commander, Naval Base BEECROFT, Commodore Malami Haruna, used the opportunity to reiterate the need for seafarers always to emplace all safety measures, including the use of life jackets within the maritime domain. He further stressed the commitment of the Nigerian Navy towards ensuring the safety and security of all seafarers within Nigeria’s maritime domain.”
