Nana Akufo-Addo, President of the Republic of Ghana has announced the closure of all borders in Ghana effective 22nd March, 2020 as measures to control the spread of the coronavirus. This decision came in to further help reduce the infection rate in the country.

This is his third address to the nation in view of the coronavirus.

“All our borders, that is by land, sea and air would be closed to human traffic for the next two weeks, beginning midnight on Sunday. Anybody who comes into the country before midnight on Sunday would be mandatorily quarantined and tested for the virus, this will not apply to goods”, he said.

Ghana has so far confirmed 21 cases that tested positive of the COVID-19 as of Saturday evening, with one death recorded in Kumasi. The deceased is a Lebanese male trader who reported to a health facility in Kumasi with fever and cough.

However the president has taken necessary measures to stem the spread of the virus, and protect the lives of our people.

“We must do everything within our power to contain the spread of the virus. The Ministry of health is mobilising new and retired healthcare professionals to augment our preparedness in dealing with a possible surge in infections. It is heartening to hear the number of retired healthcare professionals who have stepped forward to offer their services,” he added.

He also emphasized on the need for people to maintain strict self-discipline and continue to practice prescribed social-distancing, “our survival is in our own hands,” he said.
